ABUSE DYNAMICS

  • It is estimated that 16% of boys in the United States of America will be sexually abused prior to the age of eighteen
  • The vast majority of sexual abuse perpetrators are known to the child
  • Across a number of studies, females account for a substantial percentage of the perpetrator population
  • Among boys, the mean age at the onset of abuse is usually between 8 and 11 years
  • A majority of sexually abused boys encounter abuse on a weekly basis
  • The mean duration of a sexually abusive relationship extends from 2.5 to 4 years
  • Boys who are subjected to childhood sexual abuse are at greater risk to be concurrently or subsequently subjected to physical abuse, psychological abuse, emotional abuse and neglect
  • Threats and acts of violence are common perpetrator strategies used against boys
  • The most common sexually abusive act experienced by boys is coercive receptive anal intercourse
  • During a sexually abusive episode, a majority of boys have to perform oral sex on their perpetrator, fondle him or her, masturbate him or her, digitally penetrate him or her, and/or perform either penile/anal or penile/vaginal penetration on him or her
  • The abuse experience is likely to remain concealed for decades, with 27 as the mean number of years between the initial episode of childhood sexual abuse and its initial disclosure
  • If and when the abuse is disclosed during childhood, cases involving boys are reported, substantiated and adjudicated at significantly lower rates than cases involving girls
  • A majority of mental health professionals fail to routinely inquire into the possible histories of childhood sexual abuse in their male clients and patients
